Today morning as I was leaving the house for work, my daughter, who had stayed back home from school due to illness, chose to see me off.   Suddenly, we noticed that Sam her pet dog had sneaked out of the house and had ran out of the main gate to the next door neighbor’s house. We could hear him bark from within the compound which could only mean one thing; the neighbor’s gate was open. Every morning, at around six, Sam is let out of the house to go enjoy the fresh morning air before our gardener lets out the birds.   In this short period that Sam is released, his aim is not to enjoy the fresh air like we had purposed for him but to go to the next door neighbor’s gate and tease Mairo. Someone once said that real power is the ability to maintain intimacy. Real STRENGTH is the ability to maintain contact. Whereas games are an ego default when being “real” feels too scary. Human beings by default are social creatures who were created to feel and share affection. God created each one of us with a longing for intimacy. Over the years, I have made some keen observations on behaviors that people display and it is interesting to note where some of the qualities displayed emanate from. I am the kind of person who would not judge a book by its cover. I, most often than not, take time to flip the script and assess the content displayed and thereafter give my verdict. I have come to realize that many people would like to exhibit the attitude of confidence even when it is not necessary. I think it is because that is what the surrounding demands of us.   While growing up, children are forced by their parents to act confident. Even the reserved and not outspoken child is forced to act in a certain manner as to convey confidence. I do believe that this has its pitfalls because a child who is an extrovert might be assumed to be more confident than an introverted child just because the extrovert is more outgoing and more outspoken. I came across an article that stated that many of us based on our backgrounds have been raised to believe that blowing ones trumpet is a wrong thing. We have been conditioned to only one side of the coin and as a result, growing up we have been forced to wear this garment of humility that works to our disadvantage. We have been forced to believe that those who actually do blow their own trumpet are proud, bad or evil. Macmillan dictionary has defined blowing ones trumpet as “to emphasize your own achievements and successes to other people” I could define this in simple terms to mean self-promotion.   It is simply selling your own brand to the market out there. I am one of those people who dread the thought of traveling because when I travel I feel like my way of doing things will be interrupted. For instance, when I wake up I always follow a systematic sequence that is specific, for either a weekday or weekend. Thus if I am to travel, I start to imagine how all this planned sequence will be interfered with and I get worked up. I literally get stressed out days before I travel and by the time the journey commences I am worn out emotionally. Given an opportunity, I always back out from traveling. St Augustin once said that the world is a book and that those who do not travel read only a page. I am a culprit of that quote. I would like to imagine that I have read very few pages because I can count the number of places that I have traveled too.
